Risperdal (Risperidone)

Description

Risperdal is a type of antipsychotic medication that is used to treat a number of psychological disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. This medication is usually used along with a number of other medications in order to increase its effectiveness.

This medication works by bringing balance to the chemicals and neurotransmitters in the brain. It has been found that psychotic conditions such as schizophrenia are caused by chemical imbalances in the brain. For instance, schizophrenics have excess amount of dopamine in their brain. Risperdal reduces this dopamine level and thereby reduces symptoms such as hallucinations.

 

Uses

 

The medication is highly useful in treating a number of mood disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (manic episodes). It also used to reduce irritability amongst children with autism. Moreover, the medication can also be useful in treating depression, especially when used with a number of other antidepressants.

 

Dosage

 

Risperdal is usually taken once or twice a day on a daily basis. You might get a different prescription from your physician since the dosage can differ according to the severity of the condition and your response to the treatment.

 

This medication can be taken by mouth, with or without food. However, if you are taking Risperdal in liquid form, do not mix it with cola or tea. Instead use liquids such as coffee or water.
