Description
The main component of Proscar is finasteride. Finasteride is an inhibitor of an intracellular enzyme that converts androgen testosterone to dihydrotestestosterone (DHT).

This medication is used in the treatment of hair loss in men. It is particularly effective for male patterned baldness which occurs on the middle of the scalp. Proscar works by preventing testosterone from converting to DHT.
This medication is also used in reducing the size of an enlarged prostate in men. It also lowers the symptoms associated with this ailment. For instance, it reduces the urgency to urinate, and the frequency in which an individual urinates. It also improves the flow from the bladder and reduces nighttime urination.

Dosage
Always follow the prescription that your physician has provided you with. Do not take Proscar in a lower or higher dose than you have been directed.
This medication should be taken orally.
The total recommended dosage for this medication is 5mg. This should be taken once a day. Proscar can be taken with or without food.
If you forget to take Proscar, take the dose as soon as you remember. If your next scheduled dose is due soon, skip the missed one. Do not take two doses together.

Side Effects
The more common side effects experienced with Proscar are:
Changes in skin temperature
Cold sweats
Disorientation
Lightheadedness, especially when standing up after being in a seated position
Decrease in libido
The less common symptoms experienced with this medication are:
Puffiness in the face and limbs
Increase in size of breasts and soreness
Irritation of skin
Inflammation of skin
Changes in weight
Unusual feelings in the limbs
Engorgement of face
Lethargy

Contraindications
Proscar should not be taken by women or children. This medication can be absorbed by the skin. It should not be handled by women or childen.
Proscar can cause birth defects in fetuses. In the event that a pregnant woman comes in contact with this medication, they should wash their hands immediately.
Do not take this medication if you have an allergy to finasteride or dutasteride.
Do not take Proscar if you have a history of liver, kidney, or bladder disease.
Inform your doctor if you are unable to urinate.
This medication may increase the chance of you developing prostate cancer. Do not take this medication if you have prostate cancer.
This medication may alter the results of lab tests done to detect prostate cancer. Inform your physician and lab technician that you have been prescribed Proscar before you do the tests.
Inform your physician if you notice any physical or functional changes in your breast. It may be a symptom of male breast cancer.
Inform your doctor if you notice any physical or functional changes in your genitilia.
Inform your physician of any herbal supplements or medications that you may have been prescribed with.
