Description

Nitroglycerin is an extended-release capsule that is useful in treating high blood pressure – especially during surgeries. It lowers the blood pressure of an individual during surgery and thereby reduces the risk of developing a heart attack or stroke.

 

How it works

 

Since the medication is a nitrate, it works by relaxing and widening the blood vessels in the body. This enables blood to flow more fluidly to the organs and thereby increases the efficiency of the overall blood circulation system. Moreover, this medication treats chest pain by increasing the blood flow to the heart as well.

 

Its uses

 

Nitroglycerin is mainly used to reduce high blood pressure. However, the medication can also be consumed to treat angina (chest pain) and congestive heart failure. Remember that the drug must only be used to prevent the occurrence of chest pains and to treat it afterwards. It must not be consumed during the onset of a heart attack or when a person is experiencing angina.

 

 

 

Dosage

 

Usually, this medication is taken 3-4 times on a daily basis. However, the dosage can differ according to the patient’s personal health condition and response to the treatment. It is highly important to take the medication at the same time every day. Do not change your schedule without consulting your healthcare provider. The capsule must be swallowed whole – with or without food.

 

Do not bite or chew it since it can expose the entire drug and thereby increase the risk of side effects. This medication must be consumed regularly in order to experience maximum benefits. Do not stop taking the drug abruptly since it can worsen your health condition. Your physician might change the dosage when you use it on the long term since the same dosage will not be as effective as it was before.

The important of avoiding alcohol during this treatment period must not be underestimated. Consuming alcohol when consuming Nitroglycerin can not only increase the risk of blood pressure but can result in alcohol toxicity as well.

 

Do not increase the dosage in an attempt to enhance its effectiveness since it can only increase the risk of side effects and worsen your condition.
