Description
Gabapentin, also commonly known as Neurontin, is a medication used to prevent and control seizures and epileptic fits. This anticonvulsant is useful in treating seizures amongst both adults and children who are over 3 years old.
How It Works
This anti-epileptic medication works by affecting chemicals in the body. It is known that seizures are caused due to deficiencies in the nervous system. Moreover, the medication also relieves pain in various parts of the body by sorting chemical imbalances.
Uses
Neurontin is mainly used to treat seizures and convulsions. It can also treat nerve pain caused as a result of shingles or herpes virus. The medication has the ability to relieve pain caused by a number of diseases such as restless leg syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, diabetic neuropathy and trigeminal neuralgia.
Dosage
Before you take the medication, make sure to inform your physician and pharmacist about all your current medications including prescription drugs and herbal treatments. The dosage will depend on a number of factors such as your personal health status, response to the treatment and your medical history. For children, the dosage is usually based on weight.
If you are taking the tablet, you have to consume only half for each dose, unless your physician instructs you otherwise. Do not keep the other half exposed since it must be sealed well. If the medication was exposed for more than 7 days, discard it immediately. When consuming the medication, make sure to swallow it whole along with lots of water. It is best to take the dose closer to bedtime in order to minimize the side effects.

Precautions
Do not consume alcohol when taking this drug since it can increase the risk of side effects.
Do not stop the treatment abruptly without informing your physician first.
Do not increase your dosage without consulting your physician.
Do not consume this medication during a period of pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Do not drive or engage in any activity that requires concentration since this medication can impair your thinking.
Inform your physician if you have pre-existing liver disease or a history of depression.
Ask a family member to keep tabs on the consumption of the drug in order to avoid substance abuse.

Self Administration
Before taking the medication see whether you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Inform your physician about your current and past medications to avoid an allergic or negative reaction.
Do not make any changes to the dosage, including the amount of tablets and dosage time, without consulting your healthcare provider. Doing so can lead to severe complications such as increased side effects or even overdose.
