Motilium is a medication that makes use of an ingredient known as domperidone. It is classified as a dopamine antagonist. It is used in the treatment of nausea and vomiting in adults and children.
Never take these pills if you have hypersensitivity to the main or any other ingredients in the medication.
If you experience an allergic reaction, stop taking the medicine immediately and call a doctor. Symptoms of such a reaction could be a rash, breathing problems, swelling and hives.
If you have a tumor on your pituitary gland, or if you have intestinal blockage and tearing, or bloody, black and tarry stools, do not take this medicine.
Do not drink Motilium if you have a hepatic condition, if you have a heart condition, heart failure, potassium and magnesium deficiency or excess, and are on other medication without consulting a doctor first.
Tell your doctor if you are also a victim of kidney conditions such as renal failure. If you are planning on taking this medicine for an extended period of time you may want to talk to your doctor about a lower dosage.
This drug has previously been found to be connected to an increase in your risk of contracting arrhythmia and heart attacks.
These effects are common in older adults (over the age of 60), and people taking high doses for prolonged time periods.
If you are currently on antibacterials, antifungals, HIV and AIDS medication, make sure you let your doctor know.
During the course of treatment, tell your doctor about any heart arrhythmia you experience, along with any breathing difficulties and fainting.
Talk to your doctor if you are currently being treated for other diseases with medicine, either herbal or pharmaceutical.
Tell your doctor before taking Motilium if you are currently pregnant or plan on it, or if you are currently nursing a child, as Motilium has been found in trace amounts in milk.
Make sure you stick to the instructions your doctor has given you in the prescription. Do not deviate from the recommended dosage in any way.
Absorption rates for the drug are increased when it is taken before mealtimes.
Your condition may recede within a week of taking the medicine. Never take it for longer than one week without a doctor’s prescription advising you to.
Make sure you swallow the tablet in its entirety with a full glass of water, at least 15 minutes before a meal is taken.
Do not crush the pills or chew them.
Standard dosage of Motilium is one pill thrice daily before meals. Never take more than three pills of Motilium in one day.
Missed doses and overdose
If you miss a dose of Motilium make sure you take it as soon as you remember. If you are about to take your next dose, ignore the missed one. Never take two doses to make up for it.
If you overdose on Motilium, call emergency services immediately and contact the local poison hotline.
