Medrol is a glucocorticosteroid used mainly for the treatment of cancer. More popularly known through its generic name – Methylprednisolone, the drug is commonly used a supportive care medication. The drug can also be used to cure certain other diseases, if your physician finds it to be harmless.
How it works
Medrol is a corticosteroid hormone that cures various illnesses such as swelling and inflammation by reducing your immune system’s response to these diseases. The corticosteroids in the drug are also used to reduce swelling. When infection-fighting white blood cells reach your body parts with swelling, they result in various infections. The corticosteroids prevent these cells from doing so. This is achieved by the drug taking advantage of its anti-inflammatory properties.
Apart from being highly useful in treating a variety of cancers, Medrol is also used to treat a number of various other diseases. These include arthritis, blood disorders, kidney/liver conditions, severe allergic reactions and certain immune disorders. Medrol is useful in treating certain eye conditions and skin diseases as well. Along with certain other types of medications, this drug is used to treat some hormone disorders too.
Medrol is mainly consumed in the form of pills. It is best to take pill with food or milk. The dosage of the drug depends on the medical condition as well as your response to the treatment. These factors also influence the length of the treatment as well. Do not change your schedule of consumption or stop it abruptly without consulting your health care provider first since it can result in withdrawal symptoms such as muscle pain, nausea and dizziness. Moreover, increasing the dosage of the drug will not enhance its effects but only increase the risk of getting side effects.
The following are the side effects that occur due to long-term or over using of the drug.
Swelling in foot and ankle caused due to fluid retention
Increased appetite and subsequent weight gain
Changes in menstrual period
As much as these side effects are severe, not everyone who takes the drug gets affected by them. Users are more susceptible to get less complicated – however inconvenient – side effects such as headaches, chest pains, increased sweating and mood swings such as sudden confusion.
Regardless of the severity of the side effect, it is best to contact your physician and find a remedy as soon as possible.
You need to ensure that you take the following precautionary method seriously in order to avoid complications of this medication.
Do not breastfeed while taking Medrol
Inform your doctor immediately if you get pregnant during the course of this treatment
Stay away from people with colds and infections since the drug can affect your immune system and reduce your ability to fight illnesses.
Take adequate calcium and potassium supplement since Medrol causes calcium loss and contribute towards the development of osteoporosis.
If you are a diabetic patient, keep a close eye on your blood sugar levels since the daily consumption of the medication can increase your blood sugar level.
It is best to take the pill before 12.00 noon (unless your physician advices you otherwise) since it will help you to sleep better in the night. Increase your daily water intake since it can help you maintain your nutrition. Take small, frequent meals instead of having big meals since it will help you to avoid effects such as vomiting and nausea.
Remember to inform your health care provider about your past and current health issues to ensure that the drug won’t affect you negatively.
