Description
Maxalt is a selective 5-HT 1B/1D receptor agonist. Its main component is rizatriptan benzoate.
Uses
Maxalt is used for migraines and the symptoms typically associated with migraines such as nausea, vomiting, pain, and sensitivity to light. This medication diminishes the discomfort from migraines and allows individuals to resume their daily activities more quickly. It also reduces the need to consume other pain reducing drugs.
Rizatriptan, the main component of Maxalt, belongs to a group of medications known as triptans. It has an effect on the serotonin in the brain. This medication causes the blood vessels in the brain to constrict. This reduces the symptoms of the migraine, particularly the pain. The rizatriptan may also react with certain nerves in the brain causing a reduction in the discomfort.
Maxalt cannot be used to prevent future migraines, it can only diminish the effects of a current headache.
