Description
Lincocin largely comprises of lincomycin hydrochloride. It is obtained from streptomyces bacterium and is a derivative of lincomycin.
Uses
Lincocin is used to treat diseases that are a result of harmful bacterial infections. These medical conditions are caused by varying forms of pneumococci, streptococci, and staphylococci. This lincomycin medication works mainly against Gram-positive bacteria though it is sometimes successfully used against Gram-negative. Lincocin has certain components within in that make it effective against particular strains of bacteria. Lincocin prevents the production of certain important proteins in bacteria. This means that the bacteria are unable to successfully reproduce.
Lincocin is typically reserved for individuals who are unable to take penicillin-based medication due to allergies or other medical conditions. Lincocin is usually used to prevent the spread of very serious ailments due to its severity.
Dosage
Lincocin is only effective in the dosages that have been approved by a licensed doctor. The dosage of Lincocin administered will be determined by the magnitude of the disease.
Lincocin is usually given in via injection either through IV or intramuscular means.
Intramuscular dosage:
For children over a month old who are suffering from a serious disease, the dosage given is 10mg per kilogram of body weight. This is given every twenty four hours.
For cases that are even more extreme, the dosage is 10mg per kilo of body weight. This will be given every 12 hours at least.
For adults who are suffering from a serious disease, the dosage is 600mg given every twenty four hours.
For even more severe cases, the adult dosage is 600mg given every twelve hours at least.
IV:
For children with severe conditions, the dosage is between 10 to 20mg per kilogram of body weight per day. This is to be given in distributed doses.
For adults who have been diagnosed as severe, the dosage is between 600mg and 1000mg every eight to twelve hours.
For those in worse cases, the adult dosage is 8g per day. This is divided into separate doses.
Linocin should be administered by a licensed clinician or at a healthcare centre. In the event that you have had to miss an appointment where you are given Linconin, you should tell your doctor.
Side Effects
There are certain unintended effects of being injected with Linconin. Here are some of the symptoms that you can expect:
Extreme cramping in the stomach region
Soreness in the abdomen
Watery stools that may contain blood
Fever
Irritated patches of skin
Irritated throat
Unexpected bruising on the skin
Bleeding
If you notice that your stool is extremely loose or has blood you should talk to your clinician immediately.
Contraindications
There may be some adverse effects of taking Lincocin when you are pregnant. You need to get the opinion of a licensed physician to determine whether or not you should continue with the prescription.
Lincocin can be transferred to a child through breast milk. You may have to either stop taking Lincocin or stop breastfeeding. Talk to your licensed clinician about your options.
Do not take Lincocin if you are aware of a hypersensitive reaction to the medication.
You should not take Lincocin if you have also been prescribed with erythromycin.
Individuals who have a history of ulcerative colitis or intestinal conditions may be more prone to developing the side effects associated with Lincocin.
