Levlen is a form of contraceptive pill that prevents ovulation and alters the uterine lining as well as the cervical mucus to prevent sperm from fertilizing an egg.
This drug has been known to cause diseases, especially if you are also under the influence of alcohol and other medication.
Do not drive or operate heavy machinery while you are on this drug.
Inspect your breasts regularly and tell your doctor about any lumps you find.
If you are going in for surgery or bedrest, or even are taking a long flight, tell your doctor at least a month before, to prepare special precautions.
Do not take Levlen within a month of childbirth or abortion. If you have any concerns during your treatment, ask your doctor.
Dark patches may appear on your face while taking Levlen. This can be made worse by exposing yourself to sunlight.
Wear sunscreen and protection if going outside or to a tanning salon.
This drug will not protect you against STDs. Use a condom during sex for the minimum risk of contracting an STD.
While you are on Levlen, you may experience spotting or vaginal bleeding. This is normal in the first week. If the bleeding continues for longer than a week, talk to a doctor.
If you are a smoker, it can increase the risk that you are at of strokes, heart attacks, clots and high blood pressure.
If you are also on antibiotics, seizure medication and other medicines, you should use a condom as well, until your next period begins.
During the week in which inactive pills are taken, should you miss your period, call your doctor immediately. It may be a sign of pregnancy.
When you stop taking Levlen, it may take a while for the effects to wear off completely. Pregnancy may not be an option for a few months afterwards.
Do not allow children who haven’t reached puberty take Levlen. The safety of the drug in pre-pubescent children has not been confirmed.
Take Levlen exactly as your doctor has told you to in the prescription. If you want more precise instructions, check the medicine leaflet.
Mealtimes have no effect on the effectiveness of Levlen. However, taking the drug with food can lessen the risk of a stomachache.
Start taking the drug on the first Sunday after the start of a menstrual period. Take a single pill every day at the same time.
When the pack runs out, take the first pill from a new pack the next day, and continue until you want to stop.
Missed doses and overdose
Levlen needs regular dosing to have an effect on your body. If you miss a dose, and you know you did within the same 24 hours, take the dose immediately and continue as normal.
However, if you don’t remember till 24 hours have passed, you may have to clear the confusion up with your doctor.
If you do not know how to deal with the missed doses, use alternative birth control methods until you are back to regular dosing.
If you overdose on this drug, call your local poison hotline and EMS immediately.
