Description
For those who suffer from seizures, finding the right medication for their needs is imperative. Since not all anticonvulsant medications are the same, you should look at a few before making a decision.
Lamictal, also known as an anti-epileptic medication, is used to treat convulsions. In some instances, doctors will prescribe this medication for its off-label uses such as treating depression, mood swings, migraines, and bipolar disorder. For the best and most effective results, the doctor may also suggest taking this medication with other drugs.
When Lamictal Should Not be Prescribed
When visiting your doctor, you must disclose all information regarding your health. This way, your doctor can make an informed decision and prescribe you medication that is compatible with your medical needs. If you suffer from any of the following conditions, you should disclose them to your doctor:
Kidney or liver disease
History of suicidal thoughts; or
Allergies to seizure medications
Allergic to Lamotrigine
By disclosing the above conditions to your doctor, you will be prescribed an alternative medication since the Lamictal can worsen the above conditions.
Dosage Information
Any medication that you take must be according to your doctor’s instructions. When prescribing Lamictal, your doctor will prescribe it in an extended-release Lamictal XR tablet. This table should be swallowed whole with a large glass of water. Never break, crush, or chew the tablet.
If your doctor prescribes you a disintegrating tablet (ODT), then you should not swallow it whole. This type of tablet must be placed upon the tongue and then moved around in the mouth until it dissolves entirely. Once the liquid dissolves, you can swallow what is left of the liquid with a glass of water.
