Description
Gyne-lotrimin is an antifungal medication used to treat vaginal yeast infections. The product comes in two forms, as a cream and a tablet. It’s available over the counter and by physician’s prescription.
Drug Information
Gyne-lotrimin’s main active ingredient is a synthetic azole antifungal agent called clotrimazole. Azole antifungals attack the cell membranes of the fungi, effectively killing the fungal cells and eliminating the infection. Clotrimazole is mainly used to target candida (yeast) infections in the mouth, throat, feet or vagina. Clotrimazole is not absorbed through the stomach; therefore it should be applied directly onto the infection.
Application
Gyne-lotrimin should be used exactly as indicated. Carefully read the patient information leaflet that comes with the package before self-treatment. Otherwise use as directed by a physician. Always ask a pharmacist or a physician firsthand if any one of the instructions is not clear.
To apply Gyne-lotrimin cream inside the vagina, use the applicator that comes with the package. Wash hands thoroughly before touching the vaginal area. Lie on the back, draw knees to the chest and insert the applicator inside the vagina. Push in gently as far as it can go without causing discomfort. Then slowly push the plunger to release the cream. Remove the applicator and wash it before next use.
Gyne-lotrimin tablets should be inserted inside the vagina. (Do not consume the vaginal tablet.) The tablet can be inserted either using the applicator or with a finger. Thoroughly wash hands and under fingernails if inserting using finger.
Gyne-lotrimin is only for use inside the vagina. Do not get Gyne-lotrimin cream or tablet residue into eyes, nose or ears. If the cream accidentally gets into one of these areas, promptly wash with cold water. Consult a physician if unusual irritation occurs afterwards.
Dosage
Gyne-lotrimin dosage will vary depending on the severity of the condition, the strength of the medication and physician recommendations. Generally, intravaginal clotrimazole is applied once a day for seven consecutive days.
Apply Gyne-lotrimin at bedtime for the best results.
Do not apply Gyne-lotrimin more or less than as directed. Gyne-lotrimin dosages should be followed without pause for complete elimination of the infection. Do not stop using Gyne-lotrimin if symptoms disappear after a few days. The prescribed dosage should be followed to ensure that the fungal infection will not return later.
Side Effects
Clotrimazole is not known to cause serious side effects. However, the following conditions may occur in some users:
Vaginal itching, burning or stinging sensations
Erythema
Edema
Peeling
General skin irritation not present before
Other side effects than mentioned above may occur. In such a case, consult a physician immediately.
Seek medical care if side effects persist after discontinuing use.
Not following the proper dosage instructions can worsen existing side effects or cause additional side effects.
Precautions
Users prone to allergies should consult a physician or a pharmacist before using the over the counter product.
Do not use Gyne-lotrimin if allergic to clotrimazole or other similar azole antifungals.
Do not use if pregnant or planning to get pregnant without consulting a physician first.
Ask a physician if Gyne-lotrimin is safe to use with other prescription medications, if any.
