Flomax (Tamsulosin)

Description

Flomax is an alpha-blocker. Its main component is tamsulosin hydrochloride which inhibits alpha1A adrenoceptors in the prostate.

 

 

 

Uses

 

Flomax is used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men. It eases the muscles in the prostate as well as the bladder. This helps with the symptoms that are usually associated with BPH. The issues for men with BPH are largely problems with urinating. Flomax helps to relieve these complications. Flomax makes it easier to begin urinating. The medication also allows for a stronger stream of urine. It also reduces the need to urinate more frequently, especially at night.

Dosage

 

Always follow the prescription that the doctor has provided you with. Do not take Flomax in smaller or larger doses than direction.

 

This medication should be taken orally.

 

The recommended dosage for Flomax is 0.4 mg a day, once a day. The maximum recommended dose for this medication is 0.8 mg a day, once a day.

 

If you forget to take your dose, take it as soon as you remember. If your next scheduled dose is due soon, skip the missed dose. Do not take two doses together.

 

If you have stopped taking Flomax for several days, consult your physician before you start your dosage again. You will have to begin at the lowest dose once more.

 

In the event of an overdose, call your local emergency services.

 

Side Effects

 

The most common side effects experienced while taking Flomax are:

 

 Blockage of the sinuses
 Runny nose
 Inflammation of the mucus membrane
 Congestion of the nasal passages
 Cough
 Discomfort in throat
 Body pain
 Discomfort while urinating
 Difficulty urinating

 

The less common side effects experienced with this medication are:

 

 Lightheadedness
 Pain in chest
 Unusual sexual dysfunction
 Loss of consciousness
 Disorientation
 Experiencing revolving sensation

 

If you experience one of these side effects, call your physician immediately.

 

Contraindications

 

 This medication is not advised for individuals younger than the age of eighteen.

 

 Do not take Flomax if you are allergic to tamsulosin. Inform your physician if you have ever experienced an allergic reaction with sulfa drugs.

 

 Do not take Flomax with related medications. This includes drugs that contain alfuzosin, doxazosin, prazosin, silodosin, and terazosin.

 

 Inform your doctor if you have experienced any previous kidney or liver malfunctions.

 

 Inform your doctor if you have ever been diagnosed with prostate cancer or are currently undergoing treatment for prostate cancer.

 

 Inform your doctor if you have a history of heart ailments.

 

 Inform your physician if you suffer from low blood pressure. Flomax can reduce blood pressure in certain individuals. It is especially dangerous for people who have preexisting low blood pressure.

 

 Some of the side effects of this medication include disorientation or loss of consciousness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery if you have experienced any dizziness or fainting spells.

 

 Flomax may affect your pupils. In the event you are about to undergo cataract surgery, inform your surgeon that you have been prescribed with Flomax. Do not stop taking the medication unless you have been advised by your physician to do so.
