Deltasone (Prednisone)

Description

Deltasone is a drug that is more commonly known as Prednisone amongst its users. The drug is identified as a glucocorticosteroid since Prednisone contains this adrenocortical steroid. Although the medication is used to battle various illnesses, it is primarily consumed to fight a variety of cancers. Even though Prednisone is a white, odorless powder, the drug is only available in the form of tablets.

How it works

As a corticosteroid, Deltasone can influence the functioning of a number of major human organs. These include the heart, muscles, bones, and the immune and nervous system. Corticosteroids can affect an individual’s metabolism of carbohydrate, fats and protein. They can influence the immune system’s response to various types of stimuli. The balance and maintenance of fluids and electrolytes in the body can also be influenced by corticosteroids. In the case of an adrenal insufficiency, which is low production of steroids in the adrenal glands, corticosteroids are used to replace regular steroids sine they too are produced by the adrenal glands.

Its uses

Deltasone is much appreciated by patients diagnosed with cancer. It is used to treat a range of cancers including leukemia, multiple myeloma and lymphoma. It helps cancer patients to reduce their serious appetite issues. Nausea, vomiting and other side effects of chemotherapy drugs can be reduced with the use of this medication. The synthetic analogs in the drug make Deltasone an anti-inflammatory medication that can be used to decrease inflammation in various parts of the body. Moreover, the drug is used to prevent/cure allergic reactions, skin conditions, lung conditions and autoimmune diseases.

Dosage 

Deltasone is only consumed in pill form. If you forget to take your medicine, do not take a double dose the next day. This drug must only be taken once a day. They can either be taken during or after your meal. The dosage of the medication varies from one person to another since it is dependent on many factors. These include your level of fitness, other health problems and the reason for consuming this drug. The dosage of the drug and time of consumption has to be only determined by your physician.

Side effects

The side effects listed below are the most common occurring in more than 30% of people who take Deltasone.

 Increased appetite
 Heartburn
 Muscle weakness
 Impaired wound healing
 Increased blood sugar level
 Difficulty in sleeping (Insomnia)

Less common side effects include dizziness, mood swings, irregular heart rate, shortness of breath and bone thinning (due to long-term use).

It is important to note that majority of patients do not experience all of the above mentioned side effects. These are often predictable, reversible and can be reduced with the right treatments.

Taking new medication for any other illness or disease (This includes vitamins, herbal remedies and over-the-counter drugs).

 Taking aspirin or any medication that includes aspirin
 Getting a vaccination while taking Deltasone
 Discontinuing the drug abruptly – especially after long-term use
 Trying to change the dose of intake
 Taking the medicine after becoming pregnant
 Trying to conceive a child
 Breastfeeding

Self-care

Taking Deltasone for a long period of time can increase your vulnerability to certain infections. It is best to take the drug with your meal since it can help you avoid an upset stomach. But, if your physician tells you otherwise, do follow his/her advice. Avoid sun exposure and drinking alcoholic beverages or caffeinated beverages.

When consuming Deltasone, you will be constantly monitored and tested by your health care provider for adverse side effects and your response to the therapy. Therefore, you need not worry about the condition of your health.
