Irbesartan, more commonly known as Avapro is used to reduce high blood pressure by improving blood flow. This drug is usually consumed alongside other blood pressure medications to increase its effectiveness.
How it works
Avapro belongs to a group of medicines known as angiotensin II receptor antagonists. These drugs possess the ability to relax blood vessels and improve blood flow. Avapro in particular, works by narrowing the blood vessels in order to increase blood flow and decrease blood pressure.
Apart from lowering blood pressure and potential consequences such as heart attacks, Avapro can also be taken to treat other illnesses. The drug is known to be effective in treating kidney problems caused as a result of type 2 diabetes. The medication is capable of reducing the effects of kidney failure as well.
The drug must be consumed regularly during or after your meals. Remember that blood pressure has no visible symptoms. Therefore, you must consume this medication even if you feel normal. Do not change the dosage without consulting a healthcare professional since it can result in severe consequences. If you miss your dose, do not double the dosage next time. Just skip it and continue the dosage as usual.
Although the side effects of Avapro are most often limited to difficulty in breathing and swelling of throat, sometimes more serious side effects can also occur. These include:
Loss of appetite
Little or no urinating
Rapid weight gain
Pain in the side of the back
In certain rare cases, consuming Avapro on a long-term basis can also break and damage your skeletal muscle tissues. This can result in serious kidney problems such as kidney failure. Therefore, if you are experiencing unusual tiredness and unexplainable muscle pain, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
In order to reduce the occurrence of such side effects, it is important to ensure that you follow the precautionary methods given below.
If you have diabetes and are consuming drugs that contain aliskiren, make sure to consult your physician prior to the consumption of the medicine.
Do NOT use this medication if you are pregnant.
Avoid using potassium supplements unless you have your physician’s permission to do so.
People with kidney diseases must not take this medication
Do not get up too fast from a sitting position since the drug can make you feel dizzy and result in a fall.
Do not take the drug in smaller and larger quantities than what is prescribed. This can result in overdosing and can even increase the risk of side effects.
Although it is not confirmed whether the medication can be passed on to the baby during breastfeeding, it is best to avoid this medication altogether during and after pregnancy. However, since stopping the consumption of the drug abruptly can be quite dangerous, it is best to decrease the dosage gradually. Make sure to consult your healthcare provider before making such decisions.
Similar to any other medication used to treat high blood pressure, this medication also works on the long term. Therefore, do not increase your dosage in an attempt to enhance the effectiveness of the drug since it can only make your condition worse.
