Aricept is a drug used to treat dementia caused as a result of Alzheimer’s Disease. This medication does not cure Alzheimer’s since it is only useful in combating memory loss and other signs of dementia. This enzyme blocker is also commonly known as Donepezil.
How It Works
This medication works by controlling a brain chemical known as acetylcholine. This chemical is responsible for important cognitive abilities such as thinking, reasoning and memory processing. People with dementia have low levels of acetylcholine which leads to certain deficiencies in their cognitive system. The drug works by stopping the breakdown of the chemical and thereby ensures a normal level of acetylcholine in the brain.
Aricept is used to treat mild and moderate dementia caused due to Alzheimer’s disease. Although it does not cure the condition, this medication can improve the patient’s ability to function normally to a significant degree. This drug can enhance the memory, concentration, thinking, reasoning and awareness of an individual to a great extent.
This medication is usually consumed once a day during bedtime. However, your dosage and prescription may change according to your personal health status and your medical history.
