Aceon (Perindopril)

Description

Aceon, also known as Perindopril, is a medication prescribed to individuals with hypertension. It is also currently used to treat a number of heart diseases including coronary artery disease. The medication belongs to a group of drugs commonly known as ACE inhibitors.

How it works

Aceon operates by inhibiting the undesirable Angiotensin Converting Enzyme. By reducing the level of ACE in the body, it relaxes the blood vessels. This enables blood to flow more fluidly to all organs. This fluid blood flow reduces the pressure in the veins and thereby decreases the individual’s blood pressure.

Its uses

Apart from being used to reduce high blood pressure, the medication is also effective in treating various other illnesses. For example, people with diabetes take Aceon since it protects their kidneys from getting damaged. It is also useful in treating congestive heart failure as well. Moreover, it is helpful in preventing heart attacks in individuals who have coronary artery disease.

Dosage

This medication is available in drug form and can be taken with or without food. It is usually prescribed to be consumed twice a day, but do know that the dosage can differ according to the condition of the patient. Your physician might ask you to start with a lower dosage and increase it gradually in order to reduce the side effects of the medication. It can take up to several weeks for Aceon to work, so make sure to consume it regularly.

Side effects

Consuming this medication may result in various physical and psychological consequences such as:

 Jaundice
 Rapid weight gain
 Slow heart rate and muscle weakness due to high potassium levels
 Flu symptoms
 Pale skin
 Easy bleeding and bruising

Precautions

 Make sure to follow the guidelines mentioned below since they enable you to reduce the occurrence of the above mentioned side effects.

 Stay away from alcohol – It can increase the risk of side effects and lower your blood pressure to a worse state

 Do not consume potassium supplements or salt substitutes without the consent of your physician

 Check your blood pressure often. Your liver and kidney functions need to be monitored frequently as well

 Keep drinking a lot of water and other fluids to prevent dehydration

 Ensure that you are not allergic to any of the ingredients used to create the drug

Self-care

When taking Aceon, you must be very attentive about the other medications you consume. If you are allergic to any other type of ACE inhibitor such as enalapril or quinapril, inform your physician during the consultation. Moreover, if you have diabetes or any type of a kidney disease, your current medications might contain aliskiren. In this case, do not consume Aceon since it can react badly with the other drugs.

If you think that the medication is not effective, remember that Aceon takes a few weeks to work. Increasing the dosage to accelerate the speed of healing will only make your condition worse and increase the risk of side effects. Do not change the dosage, stop the medication abruptly or mix it with another drug without consulting your healthcare provider.
