Are there any major differences when it comes to the medications Benadryl and Lunesta? Well in order to understand this first let’s give a brief run down of what each of these medications is designed to do.
Benadryl is an effective antihistamine. The main ingredient in it is Diphenhydramine and it blocks the effects of histamine in the body. The drug is used to treat problems such as sneezing runny nose; itching, watery eyes; hives; rashes; itching; as well as other symptoms of allergies. It can also be used to treat the common cold.
The main ingredient in Lunesta is Eszopiclone and it works as a sedative. It’s also known as a hypnotic. It has an impact on chemicals inside the brain that for whatever reason can be unbalanced in people who suffer from sleep problems. Lunesta is used primarily to treat insomnia. It helps a person to relax and have an easier time getting to sleep and staying asleep.
What are the major differences between these two medications?
First we’re going to focus on Benadryl. Now here’s the thing. People who tend to take this medication take it during times of the year where their more likely to experience the symptoms of allergies. The thing is as the season goes on the allergy symptoms aren’t as severe as they used to be. Some people will stop taking the treatment, because they just don’t need it anymore. This leads to many people having expired Benadryl that they don’t get rid of. So when the symptoms come back, they figure they can take the expired treatment, but can they?
Well if you speak with any pharmacist about this they’ll tell you that as long as you store this treatment the way it’s supposed to be stored, then you won’t hav any problems. The worst case situation is that the treatment doesn’t work as well. If you place it in an area that’s damp or keep it outside the packaging then it can go bad fast.
Now Lunesta is different, but only to a certain degree. You can only get it from a doctor by means of a prescription. It’s a very powerful drug that has to be used the right way and you have to make sure you keep in line with the expiration date more. Benadryl has a little more flexibility in this regard. With Lunesta this isn’t the case. If you try to take it past it’s expiration date, then you’ll find the ingredients can be degraded. What this means is it will open you up to the chance of side effects. You don’t want this.
So one major difference with these two treatments would involve your ability to take them past their dates of expiration. Benadryl can be taken to some degree past it’s expiration as long as it’s stored properly and kept in the packaging, while Lunesta carries too much risk of side effectss because of degraded ingredients if you try to do the same.
